AAU Junior Olympic Championships Re-Cap

The Tri-City Relays Youth Track and Field team competed very well at this weekend's AAU National Junior Olympic  Track and Field Championships held in Norfolk, VA from July 31 through August 8.  Leading the way was Ila Mumford who was a national runner-up in the Sub-Youth (13 yr. olds) girl’s Triple Jump competition.  Ila soared to a distance of 34’5.5” to earn a silver medal and capture second place.  Ila surpassed her previous best jump by 2 feet.  Jason Grant earned All-American honors in the Sub-Bantam (9 yr. olds) boy’s shot put.  Jason’s toss of 26’4” was good enough to earn a 4th place finish.  This was Jason's highest finish at the Junior Olympics.  Makaila Roberts continued to prove to be one of the best all-around track athletes in the nation as she finished 4th in the Sub-Youth girl’s pentathalon and added to her growing number of All-American awards.  In the Midget (12 yr. olds) boy’s division, Marquise McGee finished 5th in the 1500m run.  His time of 4:53.41 was five seconds better than his previous time.  This is only Marquise’s second year running and his first All-American award.  Kevin Brown finished 6th in the Sub-Youth boys 3000m Racewalk.  Kevin improved on his previous best by more than two minutes to take away his first All-American award.  In the Sub-Youth boy’s 800m, Miles Cabean upset many perennial All-Americans and finished 7th in a nice time of 2:11.25. This was his first All-American honor in the outdoor 800m.  Sharikah Patton earned an All-American honor in the Sub-Youth girl’s 200m hurdles by finishing 8th with a time of 30.33.  This was Sharikahs first All-American Award in an individual event.  Tri-City ended their outstanding 2010 campaign with several outstanding performances.  We look forward to our Cross Country season in 4 weeks.
